Our clients for this project approached us before purchasing the house. We agreed that whilst it was an ugly ducking, it had several strengths and was just waiting to become a beautiful swan.
The house was made up of a now unrecognisable inter-war bungalow with a post WWII austerity period growth, all built in the yard and over the foundations of an original colonial era sandstone house and stables; the remains of which are evident in the rear boundary wall and neighbour two storey sandstone remnant stable building.
The bedrooms and main living area of the house just needed a coat of paint. The kitchen, laundry etc. cut the house off from the back yard, and the sun room at the front of the house did not take full advantage of the northerly aspect and district views. Our approach was to demolish both front and back of the house, and bookend the existing building with lightweight (though thermally massive) additions; each maximising winter solar gain and views.
